Pre-referral work-up
History
All referrals should comply to referral standards and include in particular:
- Pain site/frequency/intensity
- Onset of symptoms
Tests
- MSU (microscopy and culture)
- Serum Ca++, uric acid and phosphate
- X-ray renal tract
- CT kidneys/ureters/bladder (non-contrast)
- U&Es
Interim/GP management

Encourage hydration.
Advise patient about symptoms of systemic infection and of obstruction and when to seek help.

Emergency
Refer urgently to Emergency Department for the following:
? Poorly controlled renal/ureteric colic
? Obstructed kidney
