Outpatients
Information about outpatient clinics for the assessment of patients wishing to be considered for surgical treatment of obesity.
The Department will periodically contact patients waiting for an outpatient clinic appointment via SMS, with a link to an electronic form. This is part of routine waitlist auditing to ensure patient details are up to date. If you receive this SMS, please update your details.

Emergency conditions
No emergency conditions for patients with existing lap bands and intractable vomiting then please arrange urgent review by a bariatric surgeon in their rooms and if not possible then in the Emergency Department after a phone call.
Emergency care
If you, or someone else, are experiencing a serious and life-threatening injury or illness call triple zero (000) immediately or go to the nearest Emergency Department.

Scope
Each of the following criteria must be satisfied to be considered appropriate for the clinic:
- Aged 40 years or under
- BMI over 40
- Diabetes and/or metabolic syndrome (International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Consensus Definition Metabolic syndrome 2005)
- Live in the South
- Be willing and able to attend assessment process, including psychological readiness and suitability
Referral process
Referrals are only accepted for consideration via this assessment clinic and patients must attend all sessions to be considered. The assessment process may take up to 12 months and patients are not guaranteed surgery by acceptance into the assessment process.
All referrals must conform to the referral standards include recent results confirming diabetes and/or metabolic syndrome with referral.
Where available, eReferral via HealthLink smart forms is now the preferred and only secure method of referral to the Tasmanian Department of Health.

- Referral to assessment for suitability for obesity surgery clinic. Referral addressed to A/Prof John Burgess
- Assessed by Dietician. Patient can withdraw any time.
- Assessed by Psychologist. Suitable patients will be referred on.
- Patient attends group education session. Patient can withdraw any time.
- Patients deemed suitable are referred to surgeon for assessment.
- Patient placed on surgical waiting list as Category 3 patient.
