Pre-referral work-up
History
All referrals should comply to the referral standards and also include:
- Smoking status
- Known AAA under surveillance that increase over 5mm in diameter
- New or incidental finding of AAA
Tests
Tests required:
- Abdominal Ultrasound (including previous scans if available)
- Recent blood pressure results.
Vascular clinic prefers to arrange CT scan within THO-South service under Link to Medical Imaging page over. Aneurysms 6cm or greater should be referred as urgent.

Manage risk factors and advise patient of symptoms that reflect an emergency situation.

Urgent (Category 1)
Aneurysms 5.5 cm or greater should be referred as urgent
Urgent referrals should be accompanied by a phone call to the Consultant/Registrar to organise urgent review.
We will endeavour to see these patients within four weeks, or sooner if clinically indicated.
Routine (Category 3)
Incidental finding of AAA less than 5.5 cm diameter
