Pre-referral work-up

History

All referrals should comply to the referral standards and also include:

• History of symptoms or if stenosis found incidentally
• Blood pressure - current and history
• Smoking status
• Risk factors and co-morbidities including diabetes
• Neurological examination findings

Tests

• USS/Duplex scans
• Blood pressure
• Lipids, BSL

🚩 Red location flags are clinical indicators of possible serious underlying conditions requiring further medical intervention. They may or may not indicate an emergency.

Urgent (Category 1)

🚩 TIA, episode of amaurosis fugax or minor stroke require URGENT referral to the TIA/Stroke clinic

Urgent referrals should be accompanied by a phone call to the Consultant/Registrar to organise urgent review.

We will endeavour to see these patients within four weeks, or sooner if clinically indicated.
