This condition is treated in the Vascular surgery clinic.

Pre-referral work-up

History

All referrals should comply to the referral standards and also include:

• Smoking status
• Claudication distance
• Peripheral pulses
• Skin and nail changes consistent with ischaemia

Tests

• Duplex scan

Management of risk factors especially diabetes and smoking.

Please review medication if this includes a B blocker and if this must be maintained consider a more selective B blocker. Advice regarding a graduated exercise program

Urgent (Category 1)

🚩 Ischaemic changes or rest pain requires immediate referral

Urgent referrals should be accompanied by a phone call to the Consultant/Registrar to organise urgent review.

We will endeavour to see these patients within four weeks, or sooner if clinically indicated.

Semi-urgent (Category 2)

Rest or night pain, ulceration

Routine (Category 3)

Disabling claudication
