Varicose Veins or Post-phlebitic syndrome

This condition is treated in the Vascular surgery clinic.

Pre-referral work-up

History

All referrals should comply with the referral standards and specifically include:

• Chronic dermatitis, leg ulcers or foot infections that fail to heal as a result of severe varicosities causing stasis and venous ulceration
• Recurrent superficial thrombophlebitis, more than one episode of bleeding from varicose vein

Tests

• Duplex scan for – venous insufficiency"

Use of venous compression stockings, emollients.

Urgent (Category 1)

🚩 Ascending thrombophlebitis to level of saphenofemoral junction

Urgent referrals should be accompanied by a phone call to the Consultant/Registrar to organise urgent review.

We will endeavour to see these patients within four weeks, or sooner if clinically indicated.
