Pre-referral work-up
History
All referrals should comply to referral standards and also include:
- Breast examination especially presence of lump
- Unilateral, persistent pain in post menopausal women
Tests
- Mammography +/-ultrasound if over 35
- Ultrasound if under 35

Women with minor/moderate degrees of breast pain who do not have a discrete palpable lesion should have symptomatic treatment such as simple analgesia, reassurance, well supporting bra, oil of evening primrose.
Cyclical pain in a pre-menopausal woman with no lump should be considered for simple measures.
Refer if pain becomes severe or is intractable.
