Pre-referral work-up

History

It is unlikely that patients will be referred to Outpatient Clinics as this is generally an acute illness and an emergency condition.

All referrals should comply to referral standards and include in particular:

• Severity of symptoms
• Alcohol use
• Past history including diabetes, surgery and medications
• Weight loss and loss of appetite

Tests

• Ultrasound
• U&E
• FBC
• LFTSs
• Lipase

Acute pancreatitis is an emergency condition and all patients should be referred to the Emergency Department with appropriate information as above and having completed supportive and comfort measures prior to transfer.
