Neck mass

This condition is treated in the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) clinic.

Pre-referral work-up

History

All referrals should comply to the referral standards and include:

• Complete head and neck examination - pain/pain-free
• History of dyspnoea, hoarseness or dysphagia

Tests

• Non-inflammatory
  • Ultrasound + FNA
  • CT scan neck/chest
  • Open biopsy is contraindicated
• Inflammatory
  • FBE, ESR
  • Cultures if indicated
  • Other tests if indicated - TB, HIV, Cat Scratch, IM, Toxoplasmosis
  • Ultrasound or CT if persists over 4 weeks

Urgent (Category 1)

• Proven neoplasia
• Inflammatory mass persisting over 4 weeks

Urgent referrals should be accompanied by a phone call to the Consultant/Registrar to organise urgent review and the referral must be faxed.

We will endeavour to see these patients within four weeks, or sooner if clinically indicated.
