Pre-referral work-up
History
All referrals should comply to the referral standards and include:
- Complete head and neck examination findings
- Evaluation of facial nerve function with parotid lesions
- Check for local skin lesions eg SCCs
Tests
- Ultrasound and FNA
- CT scan neck

NOTE: 20% of adult parotid masses are malignant & 50% of submandibular gland masses are malignant.

Urgent (Category 1)
? ENT referral indicated in all cases of salivary gland tumours - Cat 1
Urgent referrals should be accompanied by a phone call to the Consultant/Registrar to organise urgent review and the referral must be faxed.
We will endeavour to see these patients within four weeks, or sooner if clinically indicated.
