Nerve Entrapment Syndromes

Pre-referral work-up

History

Carpal tunnel syndrome (may also be referred to Plastic Surgery)

Ulnar neuritis

Tarsal tunnel syndrome

All referrals should comply to referral standards and include in particular:

• Duration of condition
• Conservative management undertaken
• Previous surgery on area

Tests

• Consider Nerve Conduction Studies
• Search for primary cause, e.g. TFT, Pregnancy, osteoarthritis

• Consider one steroid injection for carpal tunnel syndrome
• Splintage

Urgent (Category 1)

🚩 Refer urgently if muscle wasting or associated with pregnancy for the following:

🚩 Nerve entrapment syndromes

• Carpal tunnel syndrome (may also be referred directly to Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery or General Surgery clinics)
• Ulnar neuritis

🚩 Tarsal tunnel

We will endeavour to see these patients within four weeks, or sooner if clinically indicated.
