Pre-referral work-up
History
All referrals should comply with referral standards and include in particular:
- History of condition
- Examination findings including vaginal dryness/atrophy
- Menopausal status
Tests
- Pap smear
- High vaginal swab
Interim/GP management

Consider use of topical oestrogen for vaginal atrophy.
Consider treatment for Bacterial Vaginosis, if appropriate.
Support and counselling
- Report further episodes
- Encourage return if symptoms recur / change

🚩 Red location flags are clinical indicators of possible serious underlying conditions requiring further medical intervention. They may or may not indicate an emergency.
Urgent (Category 1)
🚩 High level -Abnormal pap smear
Urgent referrals should be accompanied by a phone call to the Consultant/Registrar to organise urgent review.
We will endeavour to see these patients within four weeks, or sooner if clinically indicated.
Routine (Category 3)
- Low level abnormal pap smear
- Recurrent, troublesome or embarrassing
- Resistant to treatment
Will be seen in turn.
