Outpatients
Information about outpatient clinics for the formal application of all types of plasters for limb fractures being managed by a General Practitioner (GP).
The Department will periodically contact patients waiting for an outpatient clinic appointment via SMS, with a link to an electronic form. This is part of routine waitlist auditing to ensure patient details are up to date. If you receive this SMS, please update your details.

Emergency care
If you, or someone else, are experiencing a serious and life-threatening injury or illness call triple zero (000) immediately or go to the nearest Emergency Department.
Learn more about when to access emergency care and non-emergency care options if the injury or illness is not serious or life-threatening.
Scope
South only
The technicians work closely with the Orthopaedic Clinic. If you do not intend to manage the fracture yourself then you must also refer the patient to the Orthopaedic Clinic or the Emergency Department.
Waterproof plasters are not available from this service. Cast covers for waterproofing may be available at your local pharmacy or a medical supplies service.
Referral process
The patient/GP is asked to phone the plaster room in the first instance to arrange an appointment and email the referral. Email: [email protected]
A formal referral should be faxed with the x-ray and report, type of fracture and type of cast required. If you would like the plaster technicians to remove the cast please specify time interval for this. Please indicate the availability of the patient and the most appropriate contact number. Indicate if the patient is expecting a call or if they will phone.
There is an out-of-pocket cost. Generally, the cost is $60.00 to $250.00 depending on the materials used and the size of the cast.
Where available, eReferral via HealthLink smart forms is now the preferred and only secure method of referral to the Tasmanian Department of Health.
