Pre-referral work-up
History
All referrals should comply with referral standards and include in particular:
- Details of symptoms - superficial or deep, acute or chronic
- Details of examination findings
Tests
- Pelvic ultrasound - for deep dyspareunia
- Swabs for infection, including herpes recent onset
Interim/GP management

If superficial make sure that patient does not have a vaginal infection especially if symptoms are recent onset.
Consider physio referral if vaginismus is suspected.
Note: Women who have been sexually assaulted may present with dyspareunia and need to be questioned sensitively.
