Dr Jessica Heenan
Dr Heenan grew up in Perth, WA and completed her medical degree at University of Western Australia. She then worked at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) for many years, completing her basic physicians training and FRACP exams before commencing Haematology advanced training there. Dr Heenan gained 3 ½ years training in laboratory and clinical haematology at RPH including extensive involvement with the bone marrow transplant unit, haemophilia and thrombosis unit and participated in the running of many clinical trials and successfully completed her haematology pathology exams (FRCPA). Moving to Melbourne to complete her haematology advanced training at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Cabrini Hospital which provided valuable clinical experience, further involvement in clinical trials and ongoing supportive contacts and colleagues. Dr Heenan then completed a fellowship year in Bone Marrow Transplant at Royal Melbourne Hospital. Around this time, she also completed a post-graduate Specialist Certificate in Oncology Research at the University of Melbourne. Dr Heenan is the clinical lead of our team of Haematologists at Northern Cancer Service.
Upon completing her formal training Dr Heenan enjoyed locum work across the country as an opportunity to explore other parts of the country and gain further experience in varied clinical settings. This also allowed her to take some time to travel overseas, drive across the Nullarbor (twice!) and explore WA’s far North West.
Whilst locuming in Launceston Dr Heenan fell in love with the place (and her now husband!) and thus Tassie has now become home. Jess really appreciates the great team of staff that make up the Holman Clinic and Northern Cancer Services and the way they have made me feel so welcome in Launceston, Burnie and Latrobe.
Dr Heenan really enjoys the opportunity to practice a broad range of general haematology here, along with her more specific interests of malignant and transplant haematology. Having a strong interest in clinical trials and particularly via involvement with the Australasia Leukemia & Lymphoma Group (ALLG) Dr Heenan is excited to be able to help Tasmanian patients access more clinical trials and novel therapy options.
Dr Heenan has a strong interest in teaching and is involved with formal teaching for the University of Tasmania Medical Students here in Launceston.
