June is bowel cancer awareness month. Let's take a closer look at eating well for bowel health.
Eating foods high in dietary fibre is good for almost everyone. It helps keep your gut healthy, bowels regular, improves mood, and can help to manage diabetes and cholesterol levels.
Foods high in fibre
- Vegetables, including beans and legumes
- Wholegrain breads and cereals
- Nuts and seeds
- Fruit
If you are trying to eat more fibre, increase these foods slowly so that your gut can get used to it.
Tasty ideas to add more fibre
- Choose a breakfast cereal with oats, like muesli or porridge.
- Swap white bread for a multigrain or wholemeal bread.
- Add lentils to a soup, kidney beans to a mince dish, or a bean mix to a salad.
- Snack on a handful of nuts, a piece of fruit, or wholegrain crispbread.
- Try adding an extra vegetable to each meal.
Drink plenty and keep active
It is important to drink plenty of water and be active to help keep your bowels regular. Each day try to drink at least eight cups of fluid and aim to be active for at least 30 minutes.
