Some may assist your family, friends, and loved ones to help you during times of distress. The resources have been peer reviewed by people with lived experience and families and friends.
Staying safe
Beyond Now suicide safety plan is a downloadable phone app available for both Apple and Android.

Lifeline Australia’s free phone app helps people to create a safety plan to cope when feeling unsafe or suicidal, including a section for emergency contacts.
DBT Coach Therapy App (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy App)
DBT Coach Therapy App is a downloadable phone app available for both Apple and Android.
DBT Coach Therapy app is a comprehensive, evidence -based Dialectical Behaviour Therapy tool designed for young adults but also suitable for older adults. It is endorsed and recommended by Kids Helpline.
Getting support
SANE is the leading national mental health organisation for people with complex mental health issues in Australia and for the families and friends that support them. Offers a range of free digital and telehealth support services for people over 18 years of age with complex mental health needs, and their family, friends and carers.
Lifeline Australia is a 24/7 short-term crisis support for people who are feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty coping or staying safe. Confidential one-to-one support with a trained Lifeline telephone crisis supporter.
A free nationwide service providing 24/7 phone and online counselling to people affected by suicide.
Access Mental Health - Helpline | Tasmanian Department of Health
Mental health support, triage, and referral phone line delivered by the Department of Health, Tasmania in partnership with Lifeline Tasmania. It operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support you and help you access public mental health services.
A free, youth-focused health service for young people aged 12-25 who are experiencing mental health difficulties. Including a mental health service, sexual health clinic, AOD services and work and study services. Locations in Hobart and Launceston.
This is a link to the Project Air self-help exercises and fact sheets for people experiencing emotional distress. The Project Air Strategy is an internationally recognised leader in research, education and treatment of personality disorders. Their website provides a wide range of personality disorder resources for both individuals as well as family members, parents, and schools.

Mental Health Integration Hub | Tasmanian Department of Health
The Hub is the right door for people seeking help. The Hub provides short term practical mental health support, information and advice, as well as support to navigate mental health services and other services in the community and referrals and connections to other services. The Hub aims to increase mental health supports and create a sense of belonging and community by focussing on personal recovery.
Safe Haven | Tasmanian Department of Health
Safe Havens provide support to people in suicidal or situational distress and their families, friends, or support networks. Safe Havens are a therapeutic space with peer workers and senior mental health clinicians. The support offered is based on people’s preferences and needs.
Head to Health offer a safe and welcoming place for people to access mental health information, services and supports from multidisciplinary care teams over extended hours. Anyone can reach out for support for themselves, a loved one or patient. It is free and no appointment or referral is needed. This service may help provide immediate support to reduce distress, provide in-house assessment, treatment and support and connect you with the most appropriate ongoing support.
Head to Health services | Phone Service
Head to Health Phone Service is available from 8:30am – 5:00pm weekdays. The phone service provides mental health advice and helps to access local mental health services and supports. Head to Health intake teams will work with you to find the right support for your individual needs. They will use their knowledge of the broad range of services available in your region to identify what support is best for you. This may include referral into a Head to Health centre, Pop Up clinic, or another suitable service in your local area.

Family and friends
Caring for someone who comes to hospital emergency in high distress
A downloadable PDF Booklet written by carers (with their own lived experience), to offer support to other carers supporting a person experiencing intense emotional distress, possible self-harm and/or suicidal thinking and accessing Emergency Departments.
Mental Health Families & Friends Tasmania
Mental Health Families & Friends Tasmania is a non-government, not-for-profit organisation focused on the rights and experiences of support people for persons with mental health and alcohol and other drug concerns. The service is informed by the lived experience of support people and provides education, group support programs, and information and referral help for people with mental health concerns and their families and friends.
Care2Serve provides tailored support packages, counselling, coaching, respite, peer support, and wellbeing events for families and friends.
Aboriginal people
Tasmanian Aboriginal Health Centre
The Tasmanian Aboriginal Health Service (AHS) provides culturally safe health care to Aboriginal people across Lutruwita.
13 YARN provides 24/7 confidential, culturally safe support with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Crisis Supporters. Supporters will talk with you about your needs, worries or concerns and options for on-going support.
Veterans
Open Arms - Veterans & Families Counselling
Open Arms - Veterans & Family Counselling is a confidential 24-hour service that provides mental health assessment and counselling for Australian veterans and their families.
People managing alcohol and drug concerns
The Alcohol and Drug Services provide a number of programs to help people and their families with alcohol, tobacco and other drug issues. The services are free, voluntary, and confidential. They work with both adults and young people.
LGBTIQA + people
Working It Out is Tasmania's sexuality, gender and intersex support, education and advocacy service. They provide free, confidential in-person support sessions for individuals and their families and friends regarding sexuality, gender identity, and/or innate variations of sex characteristics.
QLife is for LGBTIQ+ people and their loved ones wanting to talk about a range of issues including sexuality, gender, bodies, feelings, or relationships.
