Priority Placement Framework
In the mid 2000’s workforce shortage was a major concern for the Australian health care system and in 2006 the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) proposed changes including the announcement of additional medical positions to be phased in across the country. These changes increased the number of medical graduates entering the Australian medical workforce.
As the major employer in the sector, the States and Territories have always partnered the Commonwealth in its education of medical students by providing clinical placements. At the July 2006 COAG Meeting, each state and territory agreed that every Australian Government supported medical student graduating from their jurisdiction would be guaranteed a medical intern position (providing the medical student is assessed as suitable for employment). This was in return for additional Commonwealth funding of undergraduate positions.
Tasmania, like most jurisdictions, maintains a medical intern recruitment and allocation priority list that determines the order in which medical intern positions are offered. This is based on applicant classification as a way of meeting the COAG commitment and, in the Tasmanian context, managing any difference between the number of available/funded medical intern positions and the number of applicants.
The Tasmanian Department of Health currently gives priority, in order, to:
- Australian permanent resident Tasmanian-trained Australian Government supported and full-fee paying medical graduates.
- Australian temporary resident Tasmanian-trained full-fee paying medical graduates.
- Australian permanent resident interstate-trained Australian Government supported and full-fee paying medical graduates.
- Australian temporary resident interstate-trained full-fee paying medical graduates.
- Medical graduates of an Australian Medical Council accredited overseas University.
Selection
The Tasmanian Department of Health will conduct a ballot-based allocation system for placing Priority 1 (Australian permanent resident Tasmanian-trained Australian Government supported and full-fee paying medical graduates) and Priority 2 (Australian temporary resident Tasmanian-trained full-fee paying medical graduates) applicants.
Joint applications
Applicants who are making a joint application must let us know when you are applying via the application form. Please provide partners full name when completing the application form. Note: your partner must also be applying for a Medical Intern position with the Tasmanian Department of Health.
Applicants with joint applications are not exempt from the ballot process.
Notification of offers
Initial offers will be made nationally from Wednesday 17 July 2024.
You will have two working days to accept or decline an offer made to work in Tasmania.

Successful applicants must hold provisional or limited registration with AHRPA. Students will need to make an application for AHPRA registration as soon as possible to allow the registration process to occur prior to the commencement of employment. The Clinical Schools will provide information and assistance regarding AHPRA registration.
Successful applicants who are not Australian Citizens or do not hold permanent resident status will need to obtain an appropriate work visa in order to undertake paid employment in Australia. Medical Recruitment Staff will provide assistance if required.
