Sexual Health Service Tasmania is a state-wide service with clinics in Hobart, Launceston, and an outreach clinic in Devonport.
The Sexual Health Service provides people with the opportunity to enhance their sexual health and wellbeing.
Our Team
- Our staff include doctors, nurses, psychologist and administrative officers.
- Sexual Health clinics are staffed by a number of clinicians, statewide. You may not always see the same clinician at each appointment due to availability.
- Our service is also a teaching hospital for students and for training clinicians help upskill our Tasmanian health care workers.
- You have the option to opt out of a teaching consult if you wish.
What services are offered?
We assess, diagnose, treat and manage:
- Sexually Transmissible Infections (STIs)
- Sexual functioning conditions impacting upon sexuality
- Gender affirming services
- Care and management of HIV
- Various genital dermatology conditions
- Treatment and cure of Hepatitis C.
- PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention)
- Purchase of safer sex supplies.
You do not need a referral to access our service, but we do welcome them from your GP or other health professional.
Psychology services
Our psychologist is experienced in working with issues relating to sexual health and mental health. These may include:
- sexual arousal and drive
- psychological adjustment following a diagnosis
- issues concerning identity and/or sexual orientation
- brief interventions for conditions concerning mood, stress, worry and addiction
- cognitive assessments and clinical evaluations of capacity (upon request).
The psychologist also works with associated relationship issues including:
- dependence
- abandonment
- guilt
- conflict.
Gender Affirming services
We are committed to ensuring people are well informed and offer assistance with many aspects of gender enquiry and transition for people aged 17 years and older.
- We provide information, support and medical assistance and guidance via Sexual Health Services Tasmania clinic.
- Parental signatures are required prior to commencing hormone replacement therapy for under-18s.
- We can refer to other support services if required.
- You may need several appointments.
- It is helpful to obtain an ‘ongoing referral’ letter from your GP.
- We are happy to take calls from other clinicians for advice regarding gender diversity.
- For under 17 transgender enquiries please contact the Tasmanian Gender Service.
What to expect
Making an appointment
You can make an appointment by contacting us directly. We will ask you the below questions to help us triage your appointment:
- the nature of your concern
- whether you have a referral
- any symptoms
- if you have previously attended our service.
Your first appointment
- Please arrive early to allow time to make your sexual health file.
- We will take your history and make decisions about your health care (in consultation with you).
- Your results may take up to seven days.
Zero tolerance policy
- We will not tolerate any form of violence or aggressive behaviours – physical or verbal.
- This applies to all staff members and patients attending the service.
- Please show respect to our staff. We are busy and appreciate your cooperation
