What is ovarian cancer?
Ovarian cancer develops in the tissues of the ovaries and the surrounding tissue, there are three types of ovarian cancer:
- The common epithelial type (90% of cases) arises from the cells on the outside of the ovary;
- The germ cell type (around 4% of cases) arises from the cells which produce eggs.
- The rare stromal type arising from supporting tissues within the ovary.

Local support and information
- There is a state-wide Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) to support woman and their families living with Gynaecological Cancer, the CNC works closely with your local care team. There is a weekly gynaecology oncology outpatients clinic run regularly at the Launceston General Hospital.
- Cancer Council Tasmania offer local support groups.
- Look Good Feel Better program is dedicated to teaching cancer patients how to managed the appearance-related side effects caused by cancer treatment through practical workshop demonstrations covering skin care, make-up and headwear.
