Recency of Practice
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) has a recency of practice registration standard that outlines requirements for enrolled nurses, registered nurses and midwives. Recency of practice means you have recent practice in nursing or midwifery for a minimum of 450 hours within the past five years. This may include practice in coordination, management, education, policy and research; and working in a non-clinical nursing or midwifery related area.
It is important to consider recency of practice if you:
- have had time away
- have let your registration lapse
- are applying for new or additional types of registration.
Access the NMBA re-entry to practice documents and policies on their website.
Managing your registration
Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) manage your registration. They assess your application against the NMBA requirements for registration. This is to ensure you are qualified and fit to practice in the profession. If you do not meet the recency of practice, you may have to apply to return to practice.
Get information about applying for nursing and midwifery registration on the APHRA website.
