Tasmanian Cancer Plan
A new Tasmanian Cancer Plan
We're developing a new cancer strategic plan to guide how cancer care is provided to Tasmanians and we would like your input.
Get involved
We are committed to understanding what is happening in cancer in Tasmania and working with all people with an interest to develop the future strategies and priorities for cancer care in the next five years. We are keen to hear about how people currently experience cancer education, screening, and care in Tasmania, including those who provided the care, people who support someone who is receiving care and people receiving care.

What’s being decided?
We want to hear about your:
- experiences with cancer prevention and care in Tasmania, and
- your ideas about where and how we focus our efforts in the future.
We want to hear from anyone who is involved in cancer care, key organisations representing specific cancer types, clinicians, researchers, friends, family of people with cancer, or have or had cancer yourself.
This information will help us understand what is currently happening in cancer care in Tasmania, and to shape future strategies.
Background
The Tasmanian Department of Health is developing a new cancer plan for Tasmania. This work started in early 2024 and is due to be completed in 2025. The cancer plan is a State Government initiative and deliverable in response to the vision and policy direction of the Long-Term Plan for Healthcare in Tasmania 2040 which was released in June 2023.
The cancer plan will provide clear guidance to Tasmanian Health and its partners regarding an agreed vision, priorities, future directions and approach to cancer care. When we talk about cancer care we include all domains of the cancer continuum including prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and palliative care as well as cancer data collection, research and clinical trials.
A Tasmanian Cancer Network has been established to lead improvements in cancer care and outcomes for Tasmanians. The Network is guiding the development and implementation of the Tasmanian Cancer Plan.
The Tasmanian Cancer Plan complements and builds on the work of the Comprehensive Care Working Group, established under the memorandum of understanding between the Tasmanian Government, University of Tasmania, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and S.H.E Gynaecological Cancer Group.
The completed Tasmanian Cancer plan will be implemented and used to inform high level future decisions on service planning and resource allocations, including where Tasmanian health funded cancer services will be delivered.
The Tasmanian Cancer Plan will align and respond to the Australian Cancer Plan, developed by Cancer Australia as a 10-year plan with a future focus of providing the right care in the right place at the right time for cancer patients.

The initial priority for the Tasmanian Cancer Network is to work with the Tasmanian community to understand the current state of cancer in Tasmania as well as opportunities to change and improve in the context of factors that may impact cancer care in the future. Your experience will help to inform development of a Tasmanian Cancer plan.
Next steps
A summary of the feedback will be provided on this page. We will use your feedback (non-identifiable) to inform the Tasmanian Cancer Plan, which we will publish on this page. We will announce more ways to engage with the Cancer Planning process after this plan is released, as part of developing future strategies any priorities.
