Approved Assessment Centres, Hospitals and Secure Mental Health Unit under the Mental Health Act 2013

Under the Mental Health Act 2013, certain premises are designated by the Minister as Approved Assessment Centres and Approved Hospitals or a Secure Mental Health Unit. These facilities are well equipped and staffed to assess involuntary or forensic patients with mental illness. An Approved Hospital is taken to be an Approved Assessment Centre unless the instrument of approval provides otherwise.
Tasmania has five Approved Assessment Centres and Approved Hospitals and one Secure Mental Health Unit.
