Waitlists and waiting times

All patients are placed on a waiting list for outpatient clinic appointments according to their clinical needs defined by their category. Waiting times vary based on service demand, clinical resources and clinical indications.

Priority patients

• Patients with potentially life-threatening conditions, including proven or suspected cancer, will be prioritised.
• You should phone the appropriate clinician as well as fax the referral.
• It remains your responsibility to monitor the patient's condition in the interim and to update the clinic on any significant changes in the patient's condition which may change the triage category. 
• You should notify, or ask the patient to notify, the clinic if the appointment is no longer needed.

Elective surgery

The National Elective Surgery Urgency Categorisation Guideline was developed with input from the:

• Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS)
• Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO)
• Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG)
• ten affiliated surgical specialities.
