Nursing and midwifery students
Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing (RUSON) and Registered Undergraduate Student of Midwifery (RUSOM)
RUSONs and RUSOMs are paid employees who are also undergraduate nursing or midwifery students. These roles were agreed by the Tasmanian Department of Health and industrial parties and were included in the Nurses and Midwives (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2023.
About the Role
The RUSONs and RUSOMs are part of the nursing or midwifery team and contribute to patient or woman centred care under supervision of the registered nurse or midwife. The RUSON can be a Diploma of Nursing student or a Bachelor of Nursing student and each has its specific scope of practice.
The RUSON and RUSOM must work to their scope of practice which will increase as the RUSON or RUSOM successfully progresses through their undergraduate program.
Many undergraduate nursing and midwifery students need to support themselves financially while studying and are often seeking opportunities for employment in healthcare settings. A paid employment model enables the RUSON or RUSOM to gain relevant experience as part of the healthcare team and develop a professional identity which leads to a smoother transition to the nursing or midwifery profession.
Essential Criteria

A Bachelor of Nursing student who has successfully completed their first year clinical placement, or
A Diploma of Nursing student who has successfully completed their first clinical practice placement.
