A plan to continue improving health outcomes for LGBTIQA+ Tasmanians and building an inclusive healthcare system over the next four years has been released.
The release of the LGBTIQA+ Action Plan 2024-2027 is an important milestone, building on work already underway to improve health outcomes for LGBTIQA+ Tasmanians.
We know from local and national research that continued stigma and discrimination leads to poorer physical and mental health outcomes amongst the LGBTIQA+ community.
This Action Plan builds on work underway to implement the solutions that we know are needed, with a particular focus on ensuring equitable and accessible services for LGBTIQA+ Tasmanians, in addition to other strategies to improve health outcomes.
It also reaffirms our commitment to listening to and working in collaboration with LGBTIQA+ organisations and community members, and continuing to promote inclusion, acceptance and understanding across our health services.
Key action areas include improving mental health services and outcomes for LGBTIQA+ Tasmanians, promoting the rights of intersex people accessing health services, and strengthening gender affirming care services within the scope of the Department of Health.
The plan extends on the work that has taken place over many years within the Department of Health, including past work plans and research and consultation such as the Tasmanian’s Telling Us the Story report, Rethink 2020 and the Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Strategy.
The Department of Health acknowledges and thanks the LGBTIQA+ Reference Group and other members of the LGBTIQA+ community who have shared their experiences and ideas in developing this action plan, but also those who have contributed to this important work throughout the years.
This year is the 25th anniversary of the Department of Health LGBTIQA+ reference group, making it one of the longest standing groups of its kind in Australia – a milestone that we are very proud of.
