We innovate in mental health care
Tasmania is leading the way in mental health care through initiatives like the Tasmanian Centre for Mental Health Service Innovation, which partners with the University of Tasmania to develop cutting-edge practices and improve service delivery across the state.
Our strategic mental health plan, Rethink 2020, focuses on expanding services, particularly in regional areas, and integrating innovative solutions like telehealth and home-based mental health care to reach more people in need.
We are also investing in mental health infrastructure, including new facilities and expanded services such as the Peacock Centre, reflecting our commitment to providing comprehensive and community-oriented care.
Doing meaningful work, in a meaningful place
At the Royal Hobart Hospital, mental health nurse Stuart is known for his compassionate care, reflecting the core values of our mental health services.
“Within mental health at the Royal, we try and take a proactive rather than reactive model with our patients,” he says. “You’re also teaching the building blocks for life.”
Our smaller teams mean you can work closely with decision-makers and be involved in the development of new initiatives and programs. Professional development is also a key focus within the Tasmanian Health Service and our work is underpinned by our CARE values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.
“Working at the Royal and in Mental Health can be very rewarding, especially when you’ve got fantastic colleagues that support you every day,” Stuart says.
Beyond a rewarding career, Tasmania offers an unparalleled quality of life. Imagine finishing your shift and enjoying the tranquillity of Tasmania’s natural landscapes -whether it’s a hike in the mountains, a stroll on the beach, or simply enjoying the fresh, clean air at the twilight market.
Our vibrant communities, rich cultural life, and excellent schools also make it a perfect place to bring up a family.
“Here in mental health in Tasmania, we’ve got 8-hour shifts which means you can go camping the night before and come back for your shift if you’re on late,” Stuart says. “You can go swimming in the afternoon after you shift if you’re on early.”
