New state-of-the-art CT scanning facilities are now in use at the Launceston General Hospital (LGH) Emergency Department (ED), enabling Northern Tasmanian patients to receive life-saving diagnoses more quickly and more accurately.
A new purpose-built CT Scanning Room and state-of-the-art CT scanner began receiving patients this week, with the facilities optimally located adjacent to the ED and with improved access to ICU and theatres.
The convenient location and contemporary design of the new scanning room combined with the high-tech machine is expected to provide better outcomes for patients through reduced time to diagnosis, reduced scan times and improved image quality.
Treating patients faster with quicker turnaround times will also save staff valuable time.
Importantly, the equipment is the first of two new CT Scanners for the LGH, with a second high-tech machine expected to be operational in October, replacing the hospital’s single existing scanner.
This will improve access for patients across the hospital by allowing one scanner to primarily focus on emergency patients while the other services the rest of the hospital.
CT – or computed tomography – scanners combine a series of X-ray images from different angles around the body to create images of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside the body. They are used in a range of situations, including to analyse internal injuries, diagnose disease or injuries, and to assist with planning treatments.
Increasing numbers of ED presentations require a CT scan, including the most seriously unwell patients such as those experiencing a stroke or major trauma injuries.
The new purpose-built facilities were built as part of Stage 2 of the LGH Masterplan.
