The Guide to Supporting Young People to Quit E-cigarettes (the Guide) and supporting resources are intended to assist health professionals working with young people from ages 12 to 24 to help effectively address their nicotine dependence from e-cigarette use.
The Tasmanian Department of Health has developed the Guide with advice from experts in alcohol and other drug services, school health education, pharmacy, primary care, general practice, research and policy. It has been endorsed by the Smoke Free Young People Working Group.
Guide to Supporting Young People to Quit E-cigarettes

A series of simple questions used to determine nicotine dependence and related loss of autonomy in young people.

A series of questions that provide an estimation of the young person’s nicotine dependence.
Behavioural strategies to support the young person to achieve their goal
Examples of six behavioural strategies that may be used to support a young person to quit e-cigarette use.
Recording your decision tool (pros and cons)
A template that can be used with a young person to record their reasons for quitting e-cigarettes using a simple “pros and cons” format.
My Plan to STOP Vaping (template)
A more comprehensive template that can be used with a young person to record their goals, behavioural strategies, quit date, reasons to quit, achievements, support team, triggers and strategies to manage triggers.
Coping with High-Risk Situations
A template that can be used with a young person to make a list of high-risk situations and triggers for vaping and a strategy or plan to cope with these.
ABC Brief Intervention and Support Flowchart
A quick reference sheet that summarises the ABC brief intervention steps and includes a list of supports and services.
