Dr Gauden retired in March 2024, after decades of caring for the Tasmanian community.
Dr Gauden graduated from the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Medicine in 1986, and received his fellowship in Radiation Oncology with The Royal Australasian College of Radiologists in 1994. He completed his registrar training in Queensland before returning to Launceston to join the WP Holman Clinic as a Radiation Oncologist in 1994.
Since then he has been instrumental in helping to develop a comprehensive, integrated cancer service for the regional and rural population of Northern and North West Tasmania.
He became Director of the WP Holman Clinic in 1998, and took on the position of Director, Northern Cancer Service, in 2016. The Northern Cancer Service incorporates the WP Holman Clinic in Launceston, Mersey Day Oncology in Latrobe and the North West Cancer Centre in Burnie.
He brought to the Northern Cancer Service his experience in cancer service development through ongoing work on Commonwealth and State strategy committees, as a board member of the Faculty of Radiation Oncology, Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists, and of the Cancer Council Tasmania.
His appointment as Clinical Lead to CanNET Tasmania resulted in the establishment of a Tasmanian Cancer Clinical Network and the promotion of a state-wide focus in cancer service planning and delivery.
His expertise in brachytherapy has been recognised both nationally and internationally. He has been instrumental in establishing the Australasian Brachytherapy Group and has previously been chair of that group.
"Dr Gauden’s service to his local community and commitment to improving patient outcomes is an inspiration and his deeply valued contributions are very much recognised by the health and wider community," University of Tasmania Distinguished Alumni citation.
