Ten Tasmanian Aboriginal students have been awarded a 2024 Ida West Aboriginal Health Scholarship, supporting their studies as they work towards a career in our health system.
The Ida West Aboriginal Health Scholarship pays tribute to the work and life of Aunty Ida who passed away in September 2003.
The Department of Health congratulates the students on their achievements, with the scholarship honouring an important legacy, while uplifting the next generation.
Aunty Ida West was one of Tasmania’s foremost Aboriginal elders and a tireless worker within the Aboriginal community who made significant contributions to social justice and reconciliation in Tasmania and nationally.
This support helps Aboriginal students to achieve their study goals and helps to address the under-representation of Aboriginal people working across health and human services.
The 10 scholarship recipients are students across nursing, medicine and mental health courses who are working towards a career in health.
Since the scholarship’s inception in 2004, 39 students have been supported to study nursing, medicine, paramedicine, allied health qualifications and Aboriginal health and community services.
The scholarships are awarded up to a maximum of $5,000 per recipient and the Department has extended funding to allow for additional scholarships in 2024 under its Health Workforce 2040 Strategy.
The 2024 Ida West Aboriginal Health Scholarships were celebrated at a presentation ceremony in Hobart on 15 May 2024.
