Winter is the perfect time for a soup lunch or dinner. Soup is a great way to include more vegetables. It also counts towards the total amount of fluid (water) you drink in the day, so can help to keep you hydrated.
While soups are good for the soul, they can be low in nutrients. Some people will find, especially if they have a smaller appetite, that they get full quickly from soups because of the volume.
Here are some tips to help you get the most from a soup meal:
- Choose a recipe that includes a good source of protein, such as meat, lentils or legumes. See our high protein soup recipe.
- Add cream, sour cream or Greek yoghurt before serving, or grate cheese over the top.
- Serve with a buttered bread roll, flat bread or toasted cheese sandwich.
