Antibiotics for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) will be available through eligible Tasmanian pharmacists from 1 March, for the first time in Tasmania.
This follows other recent changes, such as the continued dispensing initiative, which has expanded the pharmacists provide services to Tasmanians.
Expanding the role of local pharmacists helps to reduce pressure on general practitioners and hospitals.
From 1 March 2024, eligible pharmacists can prescribe antibiotics where appropriate for women aged 18-65 presenting with uncomplicated urinary tract infections.
A urinary tract infection is an infection in any part of the urinary system including the kidneys and bladder. While UTIs can happen to anyone, they are more common in females. In Australia nearly 1 in 3 females will experience a UTI before the age of 24.
