Voluntary Assisted Dying Statewide Clinical Service
The Voluntary Assisted Dying Statewide Clinical Service provides specialist advice and support to Tasmanian Government Hospitals on voluntary assisted dying, including planning and governance requirements. The Tasmanian Health Service (THS) will provide a patient-centred and individual approach to voluntary assisted dying related activities.
The THS will deliver voluntary assisted dying services in accordance with the following principles:
- procedures in relation to voluntary assisted dying will not depart from usual operational procedures wherever possible
- the service will respond promptly to requests for assistance within the service and from external parties related to voluntary assisted dying
- the service will assist all patients seeking to access voluntary assisted dying, including seeking information, making formal requests, and seeking to administer the substance, as appropriate in the circumstances
- voluntary assisted dying is a process not an emergency medical procedure. While we will respond to all distress and suffering with urgent attention, the voluntary assisted dying process will be separate from the provision of acute care
- all patients wishing to explore voluntary assisted dying will continue to be offered undisrupted access to usual care related to their illness within the service.
