Tasmanians are being reminded to prepare for a healthy Christmas and New Years’ by visiting a pharmacy for certain treatment options and health advice.
Duncan McKenzie, Pharmacist – Department of Health, said that pharmacies are an effective and accessible treatment option with certain locations to remain open on Christmas Day.
“Pharmacists can provide treatment for a range of conditions including coughs, colds, allergies, minor wound care, and also offer health advice,” Mr McKenzie said.
Helen Kruup from the Tasmanian Branch of the Pharmaceutical Society said that there are a range of expanded clinical services available in pharmacies.
“It’s important to remember that participating pharmacies are able to provide assessments and management of some patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs), and are also able to provide a resupply of many medications including the oral contraceptive pill for eligible Tasmanians – reducing the need to visit a GP during the holiday period.”
“It is also a useful reminder as we gather with friends and family over the holidays to stay up to date with your vaccinations including COVID, pertussis and RSV. Please contact your local pharmacy to make an appointment."
Richard Lennon from the Tasmanian Branch of the Pharmacy Guild said that pharmacists were a trusted and accessible health service.
“We are encouraging Tasmanians to think pharmacy first over the Christmas holiday period - with more than 150 community pharmacies located all over the state, there are a range of services and products available to help you get on and enjoy your break.
“We would like to remind any preparing for camping trips or outdoor activities to visit a pharmacy and stock up on first aid supplies such as sunscreen, insect repellent, bandages, gauze, electrolytes and antiseptic products to immediately treat sunburns or minor injuries, reduce the chance of infection, and prevent conditions from worsening or becoming emergencies.
“Importantly, if you are taking regular medications, make sure you drop in and have a chat with your local community pharmacist before Christmas if you need any additional scripts filled,” Mr Lennon said.
Tasmanians looking to check what hours pharmacies near them will be open over the break can search for pharmacies online or visit www.findapharmacy.com.au
