Glenorchy City Council launched its Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in September 2023, aiming to renew and deepen its dedication to reconciliation.
While it was developing the plan, Glenorchy City Council used a Lift Local Grant to help develop key partnerships and strengthen existing relationships with the local Aboriginal community as well as the local community and cultural organisations.
The grant facilitated several key initiatives that would not have otherwise been possible, including the commissioning of a significant artwork, laykara layna mapali milaythina-ti (Country of many fresh waters running) from local Aboriginal artist Janice Ross.
This artwork encapsulates the vision of the past, present and future through Country.
Engagement with the Aboriginal community in the Glenorchy Local Government Area informed the focus of the artwork and guided the artist selection process. This engagement has strengthened relationships and fostered trust between the Council and the local Aboriginal community.
The artwork is published on the cover of the RAP and is hung as a central piece in the Council foyer, symbolising Council’s commitment to reconciliation and cultural safety. It has been a significant step towards establishing Council buildings as culturally safe for the Aboriginal community.
The artwork has received positive feedback from the local community. By displaying it prominently, Council has taken a tangible step in promoting cross-cultural understanding and connection.
