A Step Forward grant supported the Multicultural Council of Tasmania to shoot a video documentary to raise awareness of the mental health challenges faced by migrants in the community.
Through interviews with a diverse array of participants, Journey of Resilience highlights unique stories of personal resilience in the face of racism, discrimination and mental health challenges. It also tells stories of how migrants in Tasmania can find their place, connect and thrive in Tasmanian communities.
These include the story of Nida, a single mother who realised that she had no support after her baby was born; Sabrina, a Muslim migrant who experienced discrimination when applying for jobs; and Samema, who struggled with homesickness.
A psychologist interviewed for the video, Dr John Martin, said people come to a new country with dreams and expectations, that they will have jobs, they will have a house, they will have better living.
‘But when all these expectations are tested against the reality, then we all started realising that this is not a dream land. We need to make our life better here, and definitely this journey could trigger many mental health disorders,’ Dr John said.
The video showed us we need to do better to address mental health in migrants in a culturally responsive way.
