At the Tasmanian Department of Health, our medical workforce is made up of highly skilled professionals, ranging from junior doctors to specialist practitioners, working across diverse clinical settings.
Here, you’ll have the chance to develop strong partnerships, work in collaborative teams, and participate in shared on-call models that foster a supportive and dynamic work environment.
Diverse clinical pathways and support for your career growth
Tasmania’s health system offers clinical pathways that range from preventative health and community care to hospital-based and trauma settings. For Junior Doctors, our established training programs provide comprehensive support to help you broaden your professional experience.
Dr Gabby Wilkie, originally from far north Queensland, was among the 44 doctors and 25 nurses appointed at the Royal Hobart Hospital’s Emergency Department earlier this year.
She says: “I was excited to move to the beautiful Hobart because of the new award that’s come through the state. It’s a really attractive opportunity and I’ve heard really good things about the working environment for trainees. It’s a tertiary centre where you can get excellent experience as a junior doctor.”
After talking to a Senior Doctors during the recruitment process, Dr Wilkie was impressed by the way they approached onboarding and selectivity of their trainees.
For specialists, Tasmania provides the opportunity to work in accredited university teaching hospitals and participate in cutting-edge research through affiliations with the University of Tasmania.
You’ll have the chance to mentor the next generation of doctors, engage in professional development programs, and contribute to ongoing quality improvement and service development.
"Tasmania’s a bit of a secret gem; a great place to work and importantly, live.” -- Dr Dinendra Gill
Dr Dinendra (known as Dindi) is a staff specialist in Emergency Medicine at Launceston General Hospital (LGH) and Clinical Director of Medical and Cancer Services at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).
He divides his time between the two hospitals: “The LGH Emergency Department (ED) is great, and we have a really friendly, cohesive group of staff specialists here,” he says.
“There is a really proactive approach to clinical governance, education and training and quality improvement. The work undertaken to recruit and retain high quality doctors is second to none.”
Dindi is enthusiastic about the quality of life in Tasmania: “Being in the outdoors is a key part of being here for me, whether it’s bushwalking, climbing or mountain biking -- all good ways to switch off and unwind.
Facilities and innovations across the State
Tasmania is home to state-of-the-art facilities and innovative medical practices. Whether you’re helping develop the new mental health precinct at the Launceston General Hospital or participating in research opportunities, you’ll be at the forefront of healthcare delivery in Australia.
