Women from a diverse range of cultures from Hobart and Launceston came together to share recipes and stories as part of an Australian Red Cross project to produce a multicultural cookbook.
The Connected Women Tasmania program, funded by a Step Forward grant, supports socially isolated migrant women to improve confidence, wellbeing and skills through social connection.
Their recipe book includes stories about each of the women and their culture, and what the recipes mean to them. The book also includes information on where to source ingredients and photos of the participants and their food.
One participant said: ‘by sharing our culinary heritage in this cookbook, we hope to promote cultural understanding and appreciation, fostering an environment where diversity is cherished and celebrated.’
The Connected Women Recipe Book is now on sale. It was produced following a consultation process and involved numerous cooking sessions and potluck lunches to capture the recipes and stories of the women, with much laughter, talking and connection.
The book was launched in Hobart at the Waterside Pavilion in November 2023. The pride of the women who wrote it was evident at the event.
One participant said they enjoyed sharing their passion and knowledge about hutazi [Chinese pancake] among women from different cultural backgrounds through leading a cooking session.
‘I believe food is the universal language that can connect people who speak different languages,’ she said.
