DRILL Performance Company is a Hobart-based youth dance company. It provides classes, workshops and performance projects for young people, with a focus on access, inclusion and diversity.
With the support of a Step Forward grant, DRILL brought creative dance to children who might not otherwise have been able to access it. The company aims to build young people’s confidence, skills, self-esteem and social relationships, boost school attendance, and benefit their physical and mental health and wellbeing.
DRILL held dance workshops in five Hobart schools with groups of 15 to 25 students. The workshops were not just about learning a dance; they helped students develop creative and improvisational skills to create their own dance works.
At the end of the project, all the groups came together for two days of rehearsal and performance at Montrose Bay High School's performing arts facility, where they shared their works with each other, peers and family.
The students say they had enjoyed taking part, and that the project has helped them to build trust and create better friendships, feel more confident in the classroom, and improve their physical skills.
