While conditions have eased, smoke from bushfires may still affect the air quality in locations across Tasmania.
Even well away from fire, poor air quality can pose a health risk, particularly to older or very young Tasmanians and those with chronic health conditions.
When it’s smoky, these simple steps can help reduce the impact of bushfire smoke on your health:
- Stay indoors with your windows and doors closed, and avoid physical activity outdoors.
- If you use an air-conditioner, make sure it’s not bringing outdoor air inside.
- If you can’t keep smoke out of your house, consider going somewhere where there is no smoke or less smoke, like a friend or family’s place.
- If you have a condition such as asthma or heart disease, monitor your symptoms and follow your health plan. If your symptoms worsen, call 000 or go to your nearest hospital or GP.
Tasmanians can also monitor air quality using the Air Rater App to assist in managing their symptoms with the appropriate preventative medications and response medications.
This free App provides up to date information on air quality, pollen levels and temperatures in locations across Tasmania. Further information on air quality is also available on the Environmental Protection Authority website.
