Statutory appointments under the Mental Health Act 2013
Approved Medical Practitioner
Approved Medical Practitioners have assessment and treatment-specific functions and responsibilities under the Act and are approved by the Chief Psychiatrist to undertake these functions:
- Assessing patients on Assessment Order, without informed consent.
- Applying to Mental Health Stream of the Tribunal TASCAT for a Treatment Order.
- Discharging Treatment Orders.
- Assessing involuntary and forensic patients to determine whether urgent circumstances treatment is needed.
- Granting involuntary patients leave of absence from an approved hospital.

Mental Health Officers
Mental Health Officers have detention, assessment and treatment-specific functions and responsibilities under the Act and are approved by the Chief Psychiatrist to undertake these functions:
- Detaining for the purposes of assessment.
- Escort functions.

Approved Nurses
Approved Nurses have assessment, care and treatment-specific functions and responsibilities under the Act and are approved by the Chief Psychiatrist to undertake these functions:
- Seclusion of adult involuntary and forensic patient.
- Physical restraint of adult involuntary and forensic patient.
