Radiation therapy nurses

Our nurses working in the Radiation Therapy units are skilled Registered Nurses. Radiation Therapy Nurses have extra training in caring for patients undergoing radiation treatment, they will follow up and check on regularly during your treatment. Their role is to provide education and support during your treatment, they will work closely with your Radiation Oncologist and the Radiation Therapist team.

The nurses working in radiation therapy areas often referred to as ‘RT’ nurses. Our nurses provide a range of different supports and procedures, including:

• Meet you at your Radiation Therapy simulation and planning appointment to talk about side effects and your wellbeing during treatment.
• Guidance and Education about treatment, and what to expect.
• Skin care and dressings.
• Monitoring your progress through treatment and checking how things are going with you and your family.
• Working with you and the Radiation Therapists during treatment to ensure you are comfortable and relaxed.
• Administration of Infusions / medications to treat side effects of your treatment or symptoms of your cancer.

During your Radiation Therapy our nurses are available to:

• Speak with you on the phone should you have any questions during or shortly after your treatment;
• Assess and monitor any side effects and help you manage them.
• Listen to you and your family and support you with any concerns or challenges you might have.
• Answer questions or help find the answers with you.
• Assist in arranging your next appointments and talk through your plan of care.
• Talk with doctors on your behalf for things you might have forgotten to mention in your appointment.
• Provide you with supportive care information.
• Link you with other services and supports.
