SEX AND COVID-19 Fact Sheet

Sexual Health Service Tasmania is a state-wide service with clinics in Hobart, Launceston, and an outreach clinic in Devonport. The service is staffed by doctors, nurses, psychologists and administrative officers. The Sexual Health Service provides people with the opportunity to enhance their sexual health and well being.

Sexual Health

"Sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being related to sexuality. It is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence." (World Health Organisation).

What services are offered?

Sexual wellbeing is considered holistically, no referral is required, although we welcome referrals for GPs and other clinicians and we have a range of appointment options available (see below).

At each of our clinics, clinical services primarily involve the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of sexually transmissible infections (STIs), sexual functioning, conditions impacting upon sexuality and gender diversity.

The clinical services delivered by our service are achieved by providing sexual health checks, STI diagnosis and treatment, as well as the care and management of HIV and treatment and cure of Hepatitis C. PrEP – pre exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention is also available.

Our service also provides assessment and treatment of various genital dermatology conditions, as well as treatment and management of discomfort and pain.

Low cost vaccinations for Hepatitis A and B are available from each of our clinics, and safer sex supplies can also be purchased.

We provide a multidisciplinary transgender service including information, support and medical assistance and guidance. We are committed to ensuring people are well informed and offer assistance with many aspects of gender enquiry and transition.   We can also refer to other support services if required. A number of appointments may be required and linkage with a GP is recommended.  We are happy to take calls from other clinicians for advice regarding gender diversity.

Psychologist

The psychologist are experienced in working with issues relating to sexual health and mental health. Such issues may involve sexual arousal and drive, psychological adjustment following a diagnosis, or issues concerning identity and/or sexual orientation, as well as brief interventions for conditions concerning mood, stress, worry and addiction.

The psychologist also works with associated relationship issues including dependence, abandonment, guilt, and conflict. On request, our psychologist can also conduct cognitive assessments and clinical evaluations of capacity.

What to expect when you contact Sexual Health Service Tasmania

Appointments are generally made by contacting the service and speaking with one of our administrative staff who will aim to provide you with the most appropriate appointment by asking you about the nature of your concern, whether you have a referral, any symptoms, and if you have previously attended our service.

We ask that you arrive a few minutes early for your first appointment to allow time to make your sexual health file. Please allow up to one hour for first appointments.

On your first appointment a history will be taken and, in consultation with you, decisions about your health care needs will be made.

Results take up to seven days.

Sexual Health Service Tasmania is staffed Monday to Friday. Clinic times vary from site to site so please contact your local clinic for details.

Zero Tolerance

The Sexual Health Service has a zero tolerance policy and will not tolerate any form of violence or aggressive behaviours, either physical or verbal. This applies to all staff members and patients attending the service. The service asks that you show respect to all staff, understand that we are busy and we appreciate your cooperation.
