Fissure Sealant and Fluoride Varnish Program

Oral Health Services Tasmania is rolling out a Fissure Sealant and Fluoride Varnish Program to selected Tasmanian public schools.

This preventive program offers a safe, easy and painless way of protecting teeth from decay.

Children who are getting their new back adult teeth (those around 6 and 12 years of age) and children in kindergarten are invited to take part.

Why are we doing this program?

Evidence shows us that:

  • Fissure Sealants can help prevent and reduce tooth decay on the biting surfaces of the back adult teeth.
  • Fluoride Varnish can prevent decay and strengthen both the baby and adult teeth.

Please watch this short video about the program:

How do I enrol my child?

If your child attends one of the priority schools and is in one of the eligible grades listed below, you will receive a consent form from your school. Please fill it in, sign it, and return it to the school office.

How does it work?

A dental team will visit your school to deliver the program on school grounds, during school hours. We will bring all dental equipment needed.

On the day of the program, your child will be collected from their classroom to be seen by our dental team. After your child has been seen, they will return to their classroom.

We will let you know what treatment your child has received.

What grades do we see?

Children around 6 and 12 years of age are invited to take part. At this age, children will start to get their new back adult teeth. Therefore, we target children in the following grades:

  • Kindergarten
  • Preparatory
  • Grade 1
  • Grade 2
  • Grade 6
  • Grade 7

What if my child is in another grade?

Due to the evidence that surrounds the preventive interventions provided in the program, we target children in the grades listed above.

Oral Health Services Tasmania encourages all children to have regular dental check-ups.

Children under 18 years of age who are covered by a current Medicare Card are welcome for dental treatment at Oral Health Services Tasmania, with no out of pocket expenses.

Please call 1300 011 013 to schedule an appointment for your child at one of our local clinics.

How regularly do we visit?

OHST delivers the program to schools each year.

Do I have to pay?

Oral Health Services Tasmania will bulk-bill Medicare for the treatments provided in the program, so there are no out of pocket expenses.

What if I’ve reached my dental cap?

Oral Health Services Tasmania will cover the difference, so there will be no out of pocket expenses.

My child does not have a Medicare Card – can they still participate?

Children without a Medicare Card are able to participate in the program for free; however any ongoing treatment will need to be provided by a private dentist.

What if my child needs urgent dental treatment?

The Fissure Sealant and Fluoride Varnish program provides preventive interventions only, so this is not a dental check-up. However, if we notice that your child has any dental needs, we will contact you after the program to let you know and to schedule an appointment at one of our clinics if your child is eligible for public dental care.
