Get ready for summer heat

Get ready for summer heat

While summer days have lots of positives, long periods of very hot weather can make us feel unwell. The key is to get prepared early so that you know what to do when hot days arrive.

On extremely hot days, try to:

  • Drink lots of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Check on your relatives, neighbours and friends and make sure they feel well.
  • Wear lightweight and comfortable clothing.
  • Keep out of the sun as much as possible.
  • If you have a fan or air-conditioner, make sure it is working (and set to cool). If you do not have a fan or air-conditioner, open your doors and windows if it’s safe to do so (and there is no smoke outside).
  • Keep your pets out of the sun and make sure they have plenty of cool water.

If you feel unwell, call 000. Heat illness can be life threatening.
