Reimbursement for relocation costs may include:

  • Reasonable economy class air fares for you and your family to relocate to the Bass Strait Islands from overseas or within Australia.
  • Reimbursement for reasonable moving costs of furniture and personal effects upon the presentation of two written quotes for consideration.
  • Reimbursement for reasonable costs associated with the transportation of up to two vehicles to your new Island residence.
  • Reimbursement of reasonable expenses for boarding and transporting of domestic pet(s).
  • Payment for up to 12 weeks to cover reasonable actual costs of temporary accommodation.

District Allowance

A District Allowance is paid to all nurses working on the Bass Strait Islands. The allowance is dependent on your employment; for full time employees you have access to

$2 385.25 per annum if you have dependent relatives living with you or $1 349.47 per annum if you do not. The allowance is calculated on a pro-rata basis for part-time employees.

Air Fares Allowance

After three months of continuous service, employees on the Bass Strait Islands are entitled to an allowance equal in value to the lowest return economy air fare for air travel taken from the Bass Strait Islands to mainland Tasmania or Melbourne, up to three times a year for you and dependents that reside with you. This allowance is not cumulative, and further conditions apply.

Remote and Rural Professional Development Allowance

In recognition of the importance of professional development for nurses and midwives working in remote locations, an amount of up to *$3 308 is available for additional professional development, on a pro rata basis.  You must have been employed in a remote area for over 6 months to be eligible. This is in addition to the standard annual professional development payment available to all nurses.

The allowance may include costs associated with conference registration, online education, text books, journal subscriptions, domestic airfares, and costs for accommodation, meals and transport. The allowance cannot be used for Higher Education Contributory Scheme (HECS), child care, membership of industrial organisations, or a cash equivalent payment.

This allowance is not cumulative, and further conditions apply.

Zone Tax Offset

The zone tax offset is a tax concession offset offered by the Australian Tax Office for people who live in remote areas of Australia. This offset is designed to assist with the higher cost of living, amenities and other environmental factors associated with remote living.  The zone tax offset can provide significant tax savings.

Education Assistance Payment

If you work and live on the Bass Strait Islands and have a dependent child / children attending school you will be reimbursed for actual costs associated with the transferring of your children from one school to another, up to the limit of *$702 per child. Costs can include:

(a) uniform purchase

(b) school levies

(c) replacement prescribed text books

(d) other expenses as approve.

Remote Allowance

Additional salary allowance of 10% calculated pro rata on your base rate of salary (including increment point).

Air Fares

From the Bass Strait Islands to Mainland Tasmania or Melbourne three times a year for you and your dependents

Special accommodation payment

Salary sacrifice is a flexible remuneration program which gives you the potential to maximize your salary by using pre-tax salary towards specific work related items. Salary sacrifice is different to salary packaging.  You are able to salary sacrifice additional superannuation to your superfund. This can be done as a percentage or dollar amount.
